Chapter 2 Assignments
REQUIRED from the Workbook
Assignment No. 1 (pages 1 - 2) Beethoven Theme and Variation 5 "God Save the King" as indicated in the instructions.
Assignment No. 2 (pages 3 - 4) Folk Tune: "The Ashgrove". Be sure to consider the additional questions.
Assignment No. 3 (pages 5 - 6) Chopin: Nocturne in F Minor as indicated in the instructions. The "explanation of tones not included in your reductions" can be done very simply, with the use of standard abbreviations for melodic figurations (CS, P, LN, UN, etc.)
Assignment No. 4 (pages 7 - 9) Bellini: Casta Diva as indicated in the instructions.
OPTIONAL from the Textbook (for extra credit) (scores are linked)
Mozart: Variations on a Theme by Duport, K. 573, Theme
Prepare a reduction on two staves, by blocking the LH chords, and reducing out melodic figurations in the RH part. On a separate staff above the reduction, indicate the structural melodic motion.
Schubert: Mit dem grünen Lautenbande
Prepare a reduction of the melodic motion only, putting long stems on structural melodic notes. You may find that two reductions help here--one which includes most of the melody, and another which cuts down on the individual notes.
Brahms: Ballade, Op. 10, No. 4 (measures 1 - 16)
Prepare a two-staff reduction, by blocking the LH chordes, and reducing out melodic figurations in the RH part. I suggest creating another reduction which shows the structural notes, or you can use stems and beams to connect those structural notes in your two-staff reduction.
Mozart: Fantasy in C Minor, K. 475 (measures 1 - 4)
Prepare a melodic reduction, showing clearly the implied two-voice texture of the melody. I suggest a separate reduction which shows the structural notes, although you can use stems and beams on the original reduction for that purpose.
