Chapter 7 Assignments
Chapter 7 - Some Basic Elaborations of Fundamental Structures
You will be assigned, either alone or as a member of a team, one of the pieces handed out in class. Here's what to do about your piece:
- Make a copy (either by hand, or using Sibelius/Finale; I recommend by hand, which is better for understanding) of the graphic analysis. You may choose to include the original score and align the analysis to that score, or not, as you wish.
- Think through the analysis carefully, and try to express in English what is being said via the graphic analysis. Feel free to disagree with the analysis, but be prepared in that case to present a viable alternative. You may also point out areas you're not clear about, as a way of engendering a class discussion.
- Prepare a short (~15 minutes or so) presentation for the class in which you will explain the analysis.
- Your presentation can be in the form of a handout, or if you like you can prepare it in the form of an overhead presentation, using PowerPoint or Keynote. If you do this, I strongly recommend that you get your analysis to me a day or so before the class, so I can make sure that it will appear properly; that's especially true if you create your presentation in PowerPoint. (If you use PowerPoint, make sure that all of your supporting materials such as graphic images are in the same folder as the presentation itself, or else there will be problems. Keynote presentations have no such concerns.)
- You'll need to hand in your presentation to me in written form as well.
